If you have had to flee your country due to war, violence, or persecution, you might be considered a refugee or eligible for international protection.
Refugee status is granted to individuals who, owing to a well-founded fear of persecution based on race, religion, nationality, political opinion, membership in a particular social group, gender, or sexual orientation, are outside their country of nationality and are unable or unwilling to seek the country’s protection. This status also applies to those without nationality, residing outside their former habitual residence, and facing the same fears, provided that they are not subject to any exclusion, refusal, or revocation grounds as provided for.
On the other hand, individuals seeking international protection could qualify for subsidiary protection or asylum, depending on whether authorities recognize credible reasons indicating a real risk of serious harm upon their return to their country of origin. This applies even if they do not meet the requirements outlined in the 1951 Geneva Convention necessary for refugee recognition.
